Yue Yin's Sketches

All my rough sketches and concept stuff (as well as some properly completed art) will be posted here, as well as any nifty art references, tutorials or beautiful things :D Plus a ton of fandom geekery, mostly in the vein on Rise of the Guardians or the spinoff fandom, Rise of the Brave Tangled Guardians. You can also find me at yueyin.deviantart.com.
Bleeding Tolli by ~YueYin
Hey, peeps! As you know, I’ve recently acquired the digital art programme FireAlpaca and a tablet, and I finally got around to some proper practice with it. This is my second painting (the first for my final project), but my first time where I’ve tried painting without definite lineart and only a rough sketch. This is one of the characters featured in my final project, Tolliune*, Enuillot’s ([link] counterpart and opposite in every way. Whilst Enu’s a loud, brash and impulsive demon, Tolli’s a quiet, solemn and seemingly emotionless angel, a being for whom control is imperative. Seemingly being the key word.Since this is one of my first paintings, I’d really, really appreciate any constructive feedback or digital painting tips!*(tol-lee-yoon)Copyright © 2013 Dominique Duong

Stop thinking about art works as objects, and start thinking about them as triggers for experiences. (Roy Ascott’s phrase.) That solves a lot of problems: we don’t have to argue whether photographs are art, or whether performances are art, or whether Carl Andre’s bricks or Andrew Serranos’s piss or Little Richard’s ‘Long Tall Sally’ are art, because we say, ‘Art is something that happens, a process, not a quality, and all sorts of things can make it happen.’ … [W]hat makes a work of art ‘good’ for you is not something that is already ‘inside’ it, but something that happens inside you — so the value of the work lies in the degree to which it can help you have the kind of experience that you call art.

I could reblog/post this every day as a constant reminder.

And I’m sticking it up here for people who define the “good” in Make good art in ways that I definitely didn’t intend…

Ice Hotel  Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

The drop in temperature to several degrees below zero in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden marks the start of an ephemeral art endeavour. Using frozen water from the Torne River, artists from all over the world visit this small village, 200km north of the Arctic Circle, to create an exclusive art exhibition - Ice Hotel.  Each design is created with imagination and hard work, only to melt away under the unforgiving rays of the sun come springtime. http://icehotel.com/uk/Magazine/

Neil Gaiman: Make bad art.

austinkleon:

Neil Gaiman has released a book of his great commencement address, Make Good Art.

When things get tough, this is what you should do: Make good art. I’m serious. Husband runs off with a politician — make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by a mutated boa…
